A DAY AT AVALON
Thursday, May 15th will be an optional trip to Avalon at gorgeous, scenic and nostalgic Catalina Island, Hollywood's favorite get away playland!
$60 per person (round trip boat ride, tour of Casino Ballroom at 2:00 pm, screening at 3:30 pm in Avalon Theatre.) We will plan on the 8:30 am boat from the pier (adjacent to the Queen) and return at 5:45 pm.
We will present a 35mm theatrical presentation for the 70th anniversary of Hallelujah, I'm a Bum! in the art deco movie palace, the Avalon Theatre at approximately 3:30 pm. The theatre is located in the ground floor of the Casino Ballroom.
The Casino Ballroom was built in 1929 as the world's largest ballroom for dancing. The very first film to play the theatre was Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer. Every major band played there, including Buddy Rogers, Glenn Miller, the Dorseys, Benny Goodman, and many others. The house band in the 1930's was the Jan Garber Orchestra. Elegance was the order of the day. Couples only, a dress code, coat and tie required for the gentlemen, no jitterbugging, and no alcohol allowed!
